Comments are off for this post2008 Flagship Party
Date of Event: Saturday, July 5, 2008
The following summary was written by Karl Klingforth after the party…
At noon there was a benefit lunch at the Petenwell park shelter. Bud and
Mary, the people that performed at John’s party last year provided the music
for the lunch. It was good to see them again.
We had a great turnout at the Flagship Party. John and his family sure go
all out. Bob and Judy Gause were there with their pontoon boat for anyone
that needed a shuttle from boat to John’s. As we arrived we got a ticket for
the door prizes. Everyone brought a dish to pass and the food was great.
After we ate Wayne was in the roasting chair because he retired. Happy
retirement Wayne! Then the numbers were called off and you could pick a
money tree or a door prize bag. John put so much into this.
We then relaxed and socialized, then headed back to our boats. A few of us
anchored out overnight. It was an enchanting evening with many fireworks
visible from the lake.
The moose was a tree stump that Margaret used her imagination on and I took
the picture. It was real looking.

Rick Georgeson has been in contact with John Nielson. John is planning on hosting the flagship party again. However, there have been some changes. John will not be launching his pontoon boat this year, and his dock is limited to four sections instead of the entire dock. He felt four sections will be enough to approach and unload people. Some discussion has occurred around several possibilities for shuttle from anchored boats. Bob Gause has offered his pontoon boat for a shuttle. It has been suggested that the club rent a slip at the park for a place to keep the shuttle boat in the event of rough water. Karl Klingforth will check out a slip rental for the shuttle boat. Dave Neilsen has offered to shuttle people from the park slips in the event anyone chooses to slip their sailboat there instead of anchoring in front of John’s.
Rick Georgeson will accept any additional ideas that anyone may think of regarding shuttling.
2008 Harborfest
Sadly, the 2008 Harborfest will not happen.
The event would have been held on June 21 & 22.

Here is what Karl and Margaret Klingforth found out about the event.
The company that organized the Harborfest said they didn’t get enough traffic.
Here’s what we got from the Parks Dept.
It was annually Father’s Day weekend. We contracted w/CLK Promotions who
arranged the entertainment, vendors, etc. They received a portion of
proceeds ( % of vendor food sales and vendor booths) which had to be split
between the 3 women and used for advertising etc. No $ maker - not near
enough public attended for CLK to make enough to make it worth their x and
effort so they did not renew their contract. Also most vendors were always
disappointed w/their sales - both food, craft, and flea market so were often
different each year as we couldn’t get most to come back. We do not have
vendor list either - that was CLK property - was actually Cranfest vendors,
so all in all - it’s not happening. I think Petenwell is just too far from
an interstate to make it a real $ maker.

Comments are off for this post2008 CRAW Regatta
Race Dates: June 7 & 8, Saturday & Sunday
Special thanks to Wayne Gjersvig and Jim Gerlach for helping the CRAW members run this event.

Click here for more photos from the 2008 CRAW Regatta.
There were 16 catamarans ready to race on Saturday morning. However, because of the storms that kept rolling in all day, no races were held. We tried to get a race in during a break in the weather in the early afternoon, but another front rolled in while Wayne Gjersvig and Jim Gerlach were out on the water setting marks. No cats were able to leave the beach, and Wayne and Jim got drenched due to high winds and heavy rainfall. A few boats went sailing later that afternoon during another 40 minute break in the weather, but storms came through again forcing everyone to take shelter.
Sunday morning brought constant rain. By 9:00 AM it was decided to cancel the regatta and allow people to pack up and head home. Even if the weather were to clear by early afternoon, it would have been too late to start any races. The CRAW usually likes to end the last race around 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon.
Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative on the 27th & 28th of September when the CRAW once again visits Barnum Bay Marina for a weekend of racing.

2008 Spring Triangle
Race Date: Sunday, June 1, 2008
Click here for pictures taken by Karl during our 2008 Spring Triangle.

As we have experienced in the past, the Spring Triangle conditions can vary from one extreme to another, too much wind, lack of wind, and sometimes just simply cold and rainy. This year’s race was postponed from Saturday to Sunday, for most of the participants agreed the 15 to 20 knot breezes on Saturday were just too much.
Conditions on Sunday were quite the opposite, for breezes were mostly light and variable, making sailing quite a challenge. It was a struggle just to cross the start line!! Even so, everyone participating had a fun filled day.
The course was our usual triangle with the “A” mark near Wilderness Park and “B” mark near Adams Co Park and the start/ finish in front of the Lure.
A race is usually called if no boat makes it to “A” mark within an hour. Jim Wanta’s catamaran ” Rush” made it with 30 seconds to spare so the race continued. Thanks Jim and Mike. Breezes sometimes allowed boats to reach 6.5 knots, but not often. In the 4 1/2 hour course, my boat averaged 2.5 knots. It was quite challeging to follow the wind shifts, making the race quite a challenge.
As usual, boats spread out on the course, but what was quite unusual, is at the finish, all the boats were back into a group. All the boats that finished did so within a 2 minute period. That is remarkable.
Another unusual circumstance was noticed in this year’s race. 2 boats in the race were sailed by the next generation, that is Jeff and Dee Dee Reabe’s O Day 25 was sailed by some of their children, skippered by their son Troy. In addition, Jim Melby’s son Nathan sailed with his girlfriend in his own O Day 17′ Day sailor, that he stripped down and reconditioned himself. I think that is honorable to see the next generation showing such interest in sailing. Hat’s off to our youth !!
Thanks to Jeff and DeeDee Reabe for organizing this year’s event. You can find a list of the entrants and the race results at the Website.
